Witness the towering cliff faces of the Three Capes Track and Tasman Peninsula, home to the awe-inspiring and famous Three Capes. Made up of Cape Raoul, Cape Hauy and Cape Pillar, the Three Capes are considered by many to be some of the most unique coastal landmarks in Australia – if not the world.
Your adventure will take you to the summit of Mount Brown, where you’ll experience breathtaking panoramic views of Crescent Bay, Cape Raoul and Cape Pillar. You’ll also trek the coastline from Waterfall Bay to Fortescue Bay. The longest trek of your four-day itinerary, this stretch is one of the most stunning in Tasmania with its impressive vistas and ever-changing rainforest landscape.
On the final day, you’ll head to the water for a three-hour wilderness cruise of Tasman Island, Cape Pillar and the coastline up to Eaglehawk Neck with award-winning Pennicott Wilderness Journeys. Get even closer to the local sea life who call this exquisite and untouched region home. A helicopter tour may be an alternative for the afternoon, depending on availability. Bookings must be made directly with Osbourne Heli Tours. If you don’t want to do the wilderness cruise or the helicopter tour, transfer back to Hobart after the trek to Cape Hauy or a tour of the Port Arthur historic settlement can be arranged. Also, this trek is not associated with the self-guided trek of The Three Capes operated by the Tasmanian Parks & Wildlife Service.
DAY 1 - HOBART TO STEWARTS BAY LODGE - CAPE HAUY
Day 1 – Meet in the foyer of the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Hobart at 7:15 AM. Our private bus will drive the team to the Three Capes and Tasman Peninsula. Your accommodation for the four days will be at the Stewarts Bay Lodge, situated on Stewarts Bay next to Port Arthur.
Mid-Morning Trek – Cape Hauy
Walking Time: 4-5 hours (will vary depending on team speed, breaks, etc.)
Distance: 9.4km (return)

Accommodation: 2 bedroom chalet Stewarts Bay Lodge – twin share
We will meet in the foyer of the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Hobart at 7:15 AM for our transfer to the Tasman Peninsula. As a suggestion, we recommend staying there as it makes for an easy meeting place and transfer for you, but if not, we highly recommend staying in a nearby hotel.
The bus ride to Port Arthur is approximately 90 minutes. When you arrive at Stewarts Bay Lodge, it will be too early to check-in. We will store our luggage and start preparing for the first leg of the adventure – a walk to Cape Hauy. We suggest having your daypacks ready when you leave Hobart.
When you arrive at the lodge at around 9:00 AM, you’ll be provided with a packed lunch freshly prepared by the chef’s at the lodge, which will include trail snacks. We also recommend bringing some of your favourite snacks for the day treks, as well as a small thermos (500ml) that can either hold pre-made coffee, soup or hot water to make coffee or tea whilst trekking. You’ll head off from the lodge for the Cape Hauy trek at around 10:00 AM for a 25-minute bus ride to the departure point at Fortescue Bay.
There are a few stairs to navigate on the Cape Hauy trek which is a return trek back to Fortescue Bay once we reach the end of Cape Hauy. The route is well-groomed and the steps are short in height which makes the climbing easier going. When training for any multi-day adventures, steep hill work should be a regular part of your training program, not just walking on flat sections.
The first part of the walk is through the sclerophyll forests before the track starts to head down into Cape Hauy where the forest opens up to breath-taking coastal views. Cape Hauy is home to the famous Candlestick and Totem Pole rock features, which are large columns of dolerite rock protruding from the ocean and are popular climbing and abseiling features. At the edge of Cape Hauy, you’ll also see the Hippolyte and Cheverton rock formations, which are large formations of rock that sit severed from the mainland.
After taking in the amazing views and unique rock features along Cape Hauy, we will return to the bus for the 25-minute ride back to our hotel to check-in. We would expect to have you back at your hotel to check-in by about 4:00 PM or later. After settling into your room, dinner will commence at 6:30 PM, where you’ll enjoy a beautifully cooked restaurant dinner at On The Bay made from local produce. This will be a great opportunity to relax and kick back with your fellow trekkers over a local wine or two.
DAY 2 - CAPE RAOUL
Day 2 – Trek Cape Raoul
Walking Time: 5 hours (will vary depending on team speed, breaks, etc.)
Distance: 15km (return) + side trip (Shipstern Bluff)
Meals Included: breakfast at On the Bay. Morning tea & pre-packed lunch & trail snacks prepared by On the Bay. Dinner at 1830 restaurant

Today is a trek to Cape Raoul, offering spectacular coastal lookouts of the Tasman Peninsula. It’s a moderately easy but undulating path, but there is a hill section from the top of Cape Raoul to the plateau, but apart from that hill, the route is very well-groomed. The return journey takes approximately five hours to complete, allowing us plenty of time to relax, enjoy lunch prepared by the restaurant, and take in the vistas of the surrounding Three Capes Track and Tasman Peninsula.
Heading off after breakfast at 8:30 AM, the bus ride to the start of the track is 25 minutes. You won’t have to go too far before you are rewarded with a view of the famous and incredible dolerite cliffs. This area has recorded some of the strongest wind speeds in the world, so fasten your hats!
Along the plateau, on the way to the tip of Cape Raoul, the sweeping views will continue to open up revealing the towering cliffs along the rugged coastline. You will see as far north to Cape Pillar which is the easternmost cape of the Three Cape Track and south to the ever-popular holiday destination of Bruny Island. Cape Raoul is famous for its dolerite organ pipes, and you won’t be disappointed when you see them up-close, towering into the sky from the ocean.
At the tip of Cape Raoul, you will take in the majestic views and enjoy lunch before we head back to the bus, where we expect to return to the lodge by 4:00 PM. You will have time to rest up and get ready for our special team dinner. Tonight, we will be having a team dinner at the highly acclaimed restaurant 1830 that overlooks the Port Arthur Historic Site. Made from fresh Tasmanian local produce, you will have the choice of main and dessert. Take it a little easy on the famous Tasmanian wine though, because tomorrow morning will be our longest day trek from Waterfall Bay to Fortescue Bay.
DAY 3 - WATERFALL BAY TO FORTESCUE BAY
Day 3 – Trek Waterfall Bay to Fortescue Bay
Walking Time: 8-9 hours (will vary depending on team speed, breaks, etc.)
Distance: 18km (one-way trek)

Today is the longest trek of your 4 days Three Cape Track itinerary, and it is highly regarded as one of the most fascinating on the Tasman Peninsula with its amazing views and ever-changing rainforest scenery. At around 18km long, it will take 8-9 hours to complete. We classify this leg as moderately difficult terrain and recommend a moderate to a high level of fitness to complete, but it’s well worth the effort.
There are some steep sections heading up to Tatnells Hill, but nothing a good level of fitness won’t be able to knock over. The big advantage is, it’s a one-way trek from end to end, making the distance not as noticeable because you’ll constantly be encountering different, beautiful and unique scenery along the way – making the kilometres tick over with ease.
After breakfast, we will head off a little earlier than the past days due to the distance we need to cover. Leaving at 7:30 AM from the lodge, the bus ride is a short 25-minute journey to the starting spot at Waterfall Bay. The beauty of this trip is that you’ll have stunning views back to Pirate’s Bay and Eaglehawk Nest at the start of the day, and then a taste of what’s to come tomorrow if you are doing the wilderness cruise as you skirt the coastline beautiful coastline. Depending on where we are, we will try and stop for lunch around Eaglehawk Lookout. Once we traverse the front part of the Tasman Peninsula, we will make our way towards Fortescue Bay passing through Biviwak Bay and Canoe Bay before walking the last section to the car park along beautiful White Beach.
Arriving at Fortescue, we will take our private bus back to Stewarts Bay Lodge. This arrangement will depend on the number of guides, etc. We aim to be back at the hotel between 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM to get ready for dinner.
DAY 4 - WILDERNESS CRUISE - TASMAN ARCH - HOBART
Day 4 – Morning Wilderness Cruise (Optional) – Afternoon Tasman Arch and Devils Kitchen Walk – Return to Hobart
Walking Time: 20 minutes (this is a very easy walk around Tasman Arch and Devils Kitchen)
Wilderness Cruise Time: 3 hours – departs at 9:15 AM (Optional extra if prone to seasickness – refer below for other activity options)
Meals Included: breakfast at One The Bay. Lunch at Doo Lishus after the wilderness cruise will be at your own cost
Leaving the best till last, today first up is a three-hour wilderness cruise with the award-winning Pennicott Wilderness Journeys exploring the sea cliffs up close and personal around Tasman Island and Cape Pillar which is the easternmost cape of the Three Capes Track, a then an afternoon walk around the famous Tasman Arch and Devils Kitchen which is situated on Eaglehawk Neck and in the township of Doo Town. Before having a walk around Tasman Arch and Devils Kitchen, we will have some fish and chips at Doo Lishus which is located at the well-renowned blowhole.
The three-hour wilderness cruise is an added extra in our adventure itinerary when making the booking because we know some people suffer from severe seasickness. We have provided alternative options instead of the wilderness cruise further below.
After breakfast, we will head off at around 8:45 AM from the resort for a 5-minute bus ride to the Pennicott Wilderness booking office in Port Arthur. We will store our main luggage at the resort reception ready to collect in the afternoon for the return trip back to Hobart.
The wilderness cruise departs at 10:00 AM, but the team must be booked in by 9:15 AM at the latest for departure. Next to the wilderness cruise departure office in Port Arthur, there is a shop if you want to grab some snacks or drink for the cruise.
The Pennicott Wilderness Journeys’ departure facility is close to Port Arthur, so we will manage any extra time accordingly to make sure you are there by 9:00 AM. The three-hour wilderness cruise operates in the water from Port Arthur to Eaglehawk Neck, and you will get up-close and personal with the towering sea cliffs, dolomites, and the abundant and diverse sea life around Tasman Island and Cape Pillar. For those who may choose not to do the wilderness cruise, you have the option of the following activities in the morning:
- A tour of the Port Arthur historic settlement and relax around the Port Arthur area
- A helicopter tour with Osbourne Heli Tours will vary in time and cost depending on the flight package. This option would be subject to availability, and you would need to pay for the helicopter tour directly. After your wilderness cruise or alternative activity, the team will rejoin, and we will make our way by bus to Eaglehawk Neck, which is a 20-minute bus ride and have lunch at Doo Lishus. Sometimes depending on the wind direction, the wilderness cruise will arrive back at Eaglehawk Neck where our private bus will meet you. After lunch, we walk around the Tasman Arch and Devils Kitchen tourist walk which is a 20-minute walk. After the short walk, you will be transferred back to Hobart for either your flight or to the Hotel Grand Chancellor, which is our drop off point. Those who have flights will be dropped off first. The bus ride back to Hobart is around 90 minutes, so we would have you at Hobart Airport at 4:00 PM at the latest. From the airport, we arrive back at the Grand Chancellor Hotel by around 4:30 PM. We recommend staying at the Hotel Grand Chancellor or a hotel nearby.

Terrain Difficulty: Moderate
There is no difficulty in the terrain that requires specialist equipment like ropes and the walking tracks are well-groomed and marked.
Fitness Grade: Medium
You should be able to walk at least 8-9 hours with a light daypack weighing up to 4kg.
Anyone should be able to undertake the various day treks on this Three Capes Track and Tasman Peninsula trek with a medium level of fitness and health. The fitter and more endurance you have though, the easier the days will be and the quicker your recovery. The longest trek is the Waterfall Bay to Fortescue Bay which is approximately 18km and 8-9 hours of walking depending on the team’s speed, so, if you can walk undulating terrain with hills, with regular rests over this distance and time with a light day pack, you’ll comfortably complete this adventure itinerary. We would highly recommend joining us for our weekend Six Foot Track trek if you’d like to measure your current fitness and endurance levels. Generally, we will have 2 guides per group on our Three Capes Track trek so that groups can be divided if necessary.
We are qualified Personal Trainers, so we will assess your current fitness levels and provide a training program that would be suited to complete this Three Capes Track trek comfortably. This Three Capes Track trek operates out of well-facilitated accommodation in Port Arthur, so think of your gear requirements in two parts. One part for around the accommodation before and after the day treks, and the other part for the day treks themselves.
- Normal and going out clothes for around the accommodation and for the team dinner
- Trekking boots for hiking during the day (they must be warm, waterproof, and with ankle-support – not too light and not too heavy. Leather or a composite boot is perfect. Have a look at Salomon boots)
- Trekking shirts and pants preferably wicking material
- Warm jacket and pants
- Comfortable socks for the 4 days of day treks
- 25-35 litre daypack with a water bladder is the preferable option
- If you don’t have a water bladder, a larger water bottle that can hold 2 litres
- Sun hat
- Sunglasses (preferably polarised)
- Thermos 500ml
- Rain gear
- Hand sanitiser
- Basic first aid items and medication.
The senior guide will be carrying a well equipped first aid kit during the day treks, but some basic personal first aid items like bandaids, panadol and ibuprofen are always handy to have on you.

Peak Potential Adventures is approved as an authorised operator by the Tasmanian National Parks and Wildlife Service to lead commercial treks into Tasmanian national parks and undergo ongoing compliance requirements to hold this authority.

How often do you run the trek?
At this stage, we are building up our trekking operations on Tasmania's south-east coast including the Three Capes Track and Tasman Peninsula. Given that it's daypack only and day treks out of an established accommodation base, we have the capacity subject to accommodation availability to run a trek a month all year round. We personally feel that that quieter off-season trekking months in Tasmania is some of the best periods for trekking through the popular destinations which is why we have opted to run this trek all year round.
What if the fixed dates don't work, can you organise a group custom trek?
Yes, if the dates that we have organised don't work, we can organise a custom date that would suit. We would recommend this option for groups of 8 only.
What is the best time of year to trek in Tasmania and the Three Capes Track?
From our perspective, we believe Tasmania can be trekked all year round depending on the trek location and the experience of the operator. You will generally find the colder months between June and September is much quieter on many of the trekking routes and in and around the local townships and attractions. We believe this can sometimes lead to a more authentic adventure experience and with Tasmania, there is a lot of beauty, ambience and quality local produce to experience during the cooler months.

How hard is the trek itinerary?
With the right preparation, guides and support, the four-day trek itinerary is very achievable with a moderate level of fitness and the ability to carry a light daypack. We recommend training leading up to any trek because it just makes the experience much more enjoyable. Because it's day treks out of a support location and if by chance you became sick or injured and weren't up to completing one of the day treks, you could just rest or do another activity for the day. We would strongly recommend taking our travel insurance with QBE Travel Insurance because you may be able to claim back some of the costs for that day that you missed or perhaps more if you couldn't continue for the rest of the trek.
Can I stay on after the trek?
Yes, you can extend your stay to explore more of Hobart and Tasmania.
What is the accommodation like in Port Arthur?
The accommodation in Port Arthur is at the Stewarts Bay Lodge and is four-star chalet accommodation.
Stewarts Bay Lodge is nestled between a beautiful beach, a forest, the calming ocean, a world heritage listed national park and Australia's profound Port Arthur Historic Site. Stewarts Bay Lodge is a 9 hectare (22 acres) property on the shores of Stewarts Bay at Port Arthur.
When we are at Stewarts Bay Lodge, we stay in two-bedroom, two-bathroom deluxe spa chalets, which will be on a twin-share basis. For 3 nights, we'll enjoy the comfort of a bush set deluxe spa chalet (You may be upgraded to a water view deluxe spa chalet if the bush setting deluxe spa chalet's are booked out or have limited availability).
The accommodation is twin-share, or a king bed if you are a couple and is in a two-bedroom chalet where you will share common areas, i.e. kitchen, dining room and balcony, with the other occupants of the chalet. What type of food do we eat?
For the day treks, you will be provided with a pre-packed lunch pack that is prepared by the On the Bay chefs, which is the restaurant located at Stewarts Bay Lodge. The pre-packed lunch will also include morning tea and trail snacks. Breakfast each day will be an al-a-carted breakfast at On the Bay restaurant. You will have two a-la-carte dinners at On the Bay restaurant at Stewarts Bay Lodge and one dinner at 1830 restaurant. All meals will be of restaurant quality. You will also have the opportunity to bring your own snacks or in-between food, as the chalets at Stewarts Bay are self-contained.
The meals at the restaurant will be two courses, either a main or dessert or a main and entree. We will alternate the mix, but is it generally main and entree on the first night at On the Bay restaurant, main and dessert at the 1830 restaurant team dinner, and main and dessert on the last night at On the Bay restaurant. For the team dinner at 1830 restaurant, we will organise a mixture of sides for the table.
What facilities are there in Port Arthur?
Port Arthur is a very small township but has some modern facilities and small shops. The township and local region are geared very much to the bustling tourist market.

How many people could be on this trek?
This trek is limited to a maximum of 14 people.
What is the minimum age?
Because of insurance and liability reasons, the minimum age for this trek is generally 18. The age could be potentially reduced with parental consent and the minors ability to complete the trek itinerary. If bringing your teenagers along on this trek may interest you, we are happy to discuss.
How fit do I need to be and can I get fit?
Anyone should be able to undertake the various day treks on this Three Capes Track and Tasman Peninsula trek with a medium level of fitness and health. The fitter and more endurance you have though, the easier the days will be and the quicker your recovery. The longest trek is the Waterfall Bay to Fortescue Bay which is approximately 18km and 8-9 hours of walking depending on the team's speed, so, if you can walk undulating terrain with hills, with regular rests over this distance and time with a light day pack, you'll comfortably complete this adventure itinerary.
We recommend joining one of our local weekend Six Foot Track treks or free Saturday morning monthly walks to measure your current fitness and endurance levels.
We are qualified personal trainers, so we will assess your current fitness levels and provide a training program that would be suited to complete this trek comfortably. If you are unsure, please contact the Peak Potential Adventures team to discuss your situation and to see if this trek is suited to you.
What equipment will I require?
The equipment list is on the website under additional information. Once you have reviewed the list, we will then discuss with you your equipment requirements and budget. Some last-minute equipment can be purchased in Hobart if required.
Can I trek safely if I have allergies or a medical condition?
It all depends on the allergy or the medical condition, but we would strongly suggest that you speak to your doctor first before making a booking. If it is a food allergy, that will be no problem because that can be catered for by the restaurants that will be preparing our food. Please just let us know on the adventure booking form so we can inform our team at of what you can't eat.
How much is the trek?
The trek cost excluding flights is $1,950.00
If you decide to do the three-hour wilderness cruise, there will be an additional charge of $145.00
If you decide to book as a single supplement and have your own room, there will be an additional charge of $300.00
You will also need to allow for accommodation cost the night before the trek and potentially at the end, but there is the option for a late flight out of Hobart after the trek
How much could I expect to pay for flights?
Flights can range for an economy flight to Hobart depending on the season and demand. Flights are obviously cheaper during the trekking offseason and colder months. Flights costs will also vary depending on your flight departure time and the location that you are flying from. Webjet has a great website for doing some flight comparisons.
Can I pay a deposit and pay the rest before departure?
Yes, we only require a 30% deposit to secure your position on the trek if the trek is more than 60 days out with the full balance payable 60 days before departure. If the trek is departing within 60 days, full payment will be required when you book.
Is there a credit and debit card payment surcharge?
Yes, if you book using the credit or debit card Stripe payment gateway, there will be a 1.6% surcharge. You can avoid this 1.6% surcharge by electing to do a bank transfer in the payment option.

Do I need travel insurance to do the Three Capes and Tasman Peninsula Trek?
No, it is a requirement to take out travel insurance for this trek because it's a domestic location, but we would strongly recommend it because of the financial outlay. You never know what might happen after you book or during your adventure.
Travel insurance will insure you against:

Will I get access to photos & media content?
Yes, any photos that are taken by the Peak Potential Adventures team during the Three Capes Track trek will be shared with you via our corporate Google Drive.
With this link, you will be able to view and download and save any of the photos.
Only a 30% deposit is required to secure your position unless the trek date is within 60 days and then the full payment is required.
